UM Holding BV brings scientific know-how
of the University of Maastricht to the market
Did you know that you could approach the University of Maastricht if you need very special
contact lenses? And that the university has developed test kits for cancer research, which
inform patients quickly about the progress of their disease? That scientists have
developed a policy support system that is used for the integral management of the
Waddenzee?
All of these commercial activities of the University of Maastricht are concentrated within
UM Holding BV, the holding company of the University of Maastricht.
Background and objective
UM Holding BV was founded in 1992 by the University of Maastricht as a holding company for
its market-oriented activities. The objective of UM Holding is setting up and
participating in business enterprises that make use of the knowledge present within the
university. UM Holding transfers new knowledge that emerges within the UM to the market
and contributes to inventions and discoveries that can be applied commercially.
Region
Operating closer to the market provides valuable experience and mutual insight in the
social applicability of scientific knowledge. This scientific knowledge is used to create
high-quality employment around the university, which offers benefits to the entire region.
The university itself also profits from this development, in the form of jobs for
graduates and future commissions for contract research.
Structure of UM Holding BV
UM Holding is a regular BV according to Dutch law. All shares are held by the University
of Maastricht. The university financed the shares from its own budget. At the start, the
share capital was NLG 200,000. In 1997, the share capital was increased to NLG 700,000.
Management
The management of UM Holding consists of the members of the Board of Governors of the
University of Maastricht. The management is supported and supervised by the Board of
Supervisors, consisting of three representatives from the business community. The
day-to-day management is in the hands of the managing director. The latter is assisted by
a team of financial, personnel, legal and fiscal staff members of the University of
Maastricht.
Subsidiaries
The holding company has three types of subsidiaries: full subsidiaries, services
companies, and participations.
Full subsidiaries
These subsidiaries are the closest to the objective of making scientific knowledge
applicable in society. Examples include Biomat BV, MU-Bio Research BV, and ERIM BV. In
principle, UM Holding owns all the shares in these companies. For more information
concerning the subsidiaries, please consult the appendix included in this information
folder.
Services companies
These subsidiaries provide general and technical services on a commercial basis for the
University of Maastricht and third parties. In principle, UM Holding also owns all the
shares in these companies.
Examples include Media Service BV and the temporary job agency (in the process of being
established).
Participations
UM Holding may also take a minority share in companies that carry out activities that are
not related to the University of Maastricht. Such participation by the university may be
up to 49% and is usually temporary.
